If you are like most people who are mystified with the concept of leadership, then you will find David Grabovac’s “Are Leader’s Born or Made?” a must-read. The book reveals many interesting bits about leadership, specifically what constitute an effective leader. What’s DNA got to do with it and is it really possible to learn how to become a leader? Answers are in the book but I must warn you to get ready to throw some myth out the window.
Contrary to “common knowledge” that leaders can only come straight from the womb, some people can actually become great leaders through training and experience. Development has certain limitations though because some traits are either inherent in you or not. However, knowing what you can and can’t change will help a lot when working on your leadership skills. If you were born with average skills in communication, for instance, you can work on that aspect and become a better leader.
The book is also an excellent reference for people who are bearing the huge responsibility of choosing leaders. There are numerous misconceptions when it comes to traits that are synonymous to impressive leadership. For example, not all people who are persistent are effective leaders. While it’s a trait common to many leaders, studies show that it is not indicative of good leadership. The author is from the academe and as expected, does not rely on sheer opinion. Facts and pages of history are deeply integrated in the book. He has also spent years working with leaders in the government and private sector.
Lastly, “Are Leader’s Born or Made?” is an interesting material for those who are simply passionate about leadership. It has a comprehensive segment about some of history’s greatest leaders and a fantastic list of leadership quotations. I’d gladly recommend this book to anyone inspired by the subject of leadership. Leaders have a huge influence over the way the world works and David Grabovac’s insights are not only practical in the corporate world but also in every aspect of society.
